Bus overturns in Lancaster, 1 critically injured, 20 hospitalized

A bus carrying as many as 40 passengers overturned in Lancaster on Wednesday morning, July 2, leaving one person in critical condition and a total of about 20 people hospitalized, authorities said.

The crash was reported around 11:15 a.m. on Sierra Highway, just south of West Avenue C, according to California Highway Patrol Officer R. Manzano. The bus veered off the roadway and came to rest on its side after crossing railroad tracks. It was unclear how many times the vehicle may have rolled or what caused it to leave the road.

Approximately 20 people were transported to area hospitals, including one passenger who was in critical condition, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson Howard Tieu said. It was not immediately clear how many were children.

A medical helicopter was initially requested for an 8-year-old boy on board, but he was later reported to be in stable condition, NBC reported.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
