Nursing their careers
Two students from Campbell Union High School District were among 10 students from Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) center’s Medical Assisting, Medical Science/Health Careers and Nursing Careers courses who were pinned on July 21 after completing the Mission College’s summer Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program.
Derartu Moti from Del Mar High School and Charlotte Riley Kao from Leigh High School are both now eligible to take the California state exam to become a CNA. The exam includes both a written knowledge section and a hands-on demonstration of 23 essential nursing assistant skills.
The summer program is only open to high school juniors and combines 60 hours of classroom instruction, 24 hours of lab time and 100 hours of clinical training.
History Happy Hour
The next History Happy Hour at Campbell’s Ainsley House will delve into the story of one of Santa Clara County’s most significant heritage sites.
Rob McDonnell, a park interpreter with Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation, will be on hand Friday, Aug. 15, at 5:30 p.m. to talk about the Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch. Now part of Santa Teresa County Park, this 20-acre site traces its roots back to Rancho Santa Teresa, a massive land grant awarded in 1834 to José Joaquín Bernal, one of San Jose’s earliest Spanish settlers.
McDonnell will explore the ranch’s transformation through generations of the Bernal, Gulnac and Joice families and how it became a living heritage site within Santa Teresa County Park. The presentation will also touch on the cultural significance of the Santa Teresa Spring to both indigenous Ohlone communities and early settlers and the efforts to preserve the ranch from suburban development.
Tickets are $25 at campbellmuseums.com.
