Car falls onto BART tracks in Castro Valley, interrupting service

CASTRO VALLEY — A wrecked car fell off a tow truck and onto the BART tracks in Castro Valley mid-Tuesday afternoon, interrupting service between the Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton stations, according to a transit agency spokesperson.

The incident stemmed from a three-car crash before 3 p.m. on westbound Interstate 580 near Castro Valley Boulevard.

Early reports indicated an unoccupied car was being loaded onto a tow truck when it fell onto the tracks below, according to BART spokesperson Michelle Robertson.

In an update just before 5:10 p.m., Robertson said a crane had arrived at the scene to remove the car from the tracks. The California Highway Patrol is coordinating the operation with assistance from the BART Police Department.

Trains are expected to begin single-tracking between the Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton BART stations around 6:30 p.m., according to Robertson. For now, trains are turning around at Castro Valley and running between West Dublin and Pleasanton.

Additional repairs will take place later tonight after regular service ends, Robertson said.

Check back for updates.
