Chicago, Cook County issue disaster proclamation after July flooding

City and county officials issued a disaster proclamation Wednesday to unlock additional resources to assist residents after flooding damaged more than 1,000 homes across the Chicago area late last month.

About 3,300 residents in Chicago and suburban Cook County answered a flood assessment survey to determine their eligibility for federal assistance due to damage to their homes from the storms between July 25 and 28, city officials said.

According to the surveys, 111 homes were considered destroyed from the storms, while 544 sustained major damage, 1,451 were considered to have minor damage and another 1,018 were affected.

Areas across the Southwest Side were hit hardest, including suburban Burbank, Justice and Summit.

“Issuing this disaster proclamation is a necessary step to address the severe damage in Chicago and Cook County due to recent floods,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement.

City and county officials are continuing to work with community organizations and city agencies “to ensure resident needs are being met in the aftermath of the flood,” according to the city Office of Emergency Management and Communications.

Officials are also exploring reimbursement from the federal government for expenses made by city and suburban agencies during the storm cleanup.
