City bans shared e-scooters from Sheridan Road to reduce sidewalk riding
The city is banning e-scooters from a busy Edgewater road to reduce the number of people riding on sidewalks.
Geofencing restrictions went into effect to prevent GPS-tracked Divvy and Lime e-scooters from riding on Sheridan Road and its sidewalks from Bryn Mawr to Devon avenues, local Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth (48th) announced last week.
The city says it expanded an existing no-scooter zone on the Lakefront Trail to include a 1-mile stretch of Sheridan Road connecting the neighborhood to Lake Shore Drive.
Any Lime or Divvy scooter riding on that section of road or sidewalk will automatically stop once GPS has detected the location. Similar geofencing restrictions have been in place for years on the 606 Trail, Riverwalk and at O’Hare Airport.

The Chicago Department of Transportation implemented the new riding restrictions in coordination with Manaa-Hoppenworth’s office “to address community concerns about frequent sidewalk riding along Sheridan,” the agency said in a statement shared with WGN News, which first reported on the restrictions.
Manaa-Hoppenworth said her office is installing signs and pavement markings at the Lakefront Trail head at Ardmore Avenue and Sheridan to encourage riders to use the bike-friendly greenways on Winthrop and Kenmore avenues instead.
Manaa-Hoppenworth says she is also pushing to restrict Divvy e-bikes from the road.
“Getting bikes off of Sheridan Road sidewalks has been a public safety priority for me and my team, because we know that everyone is safer when we organize our streets with clear spaces for pedestrians, vehicles, and cyclists,” Manaa-Hoppenworth said in her announcement on social media.
