An event to mark St George’s Day in London has descended into chaos after attendees broke through a police cordon.

It’s thought members of far right groups as well as groups linked to football clubs travelling from elsewhere in the UK are in attendance.

The groups gathered in the Waterloo area before joining the event in Whitehall.

But the Metropolitan Police were forced to intervene as attendees broke through the cordon an hour before the event began, with mounted officers intervening to restore it.

Police consulted with the organiser of the event in Richmond Terrace, and imposed a number of conditions under the Public Order Act including a cordon.

However a large number of people disobeyed these conditions and pushed through the cordon and continued up to Whitehall.

Attendees draped in St George’s flags forced their way through the cordon.
