Thunderstorms and high winds on Colorado’s Front Range and Eastern Plains caused a ground delay at Denver International Airport on Saturday, stopping hundreds of flights from leaving on time.
Federal Aviation Administration officials issued a ground delay for DIA as of 3 p.m. because of the storms, which is delaying departures by an average of 53 minutes.
The ground delay is set to last until 7 p.m.
There were 271 DIA flight delays as of 3:10 p.m. and one canceled flight, according to the flight tracking website FlightAware. United Airlines reported 88 delays, followed by Southwest Airlines with 86 delayed flights and SkyWest with 64 flight delays.
Severe thunderstorms could bring winds as high as 60 mph through Saturday night, mostly along and north of Interstate 70, according to the National Weather Service.
Southwest winds are also expected to increase throughout the day, with up to 40 mph gusts likely throughout the region.
This is a developing story.
