A 19-year-old motorist died about 20 minutes after someone in a silver SUV shot her causing her to drive head-on into a car late Tuesday on the South Side.
About 11 p.m. Cyra C. Magby, 19, was behind the wheel of a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu in the 800 block of West Garfield Boulevard when a silver SUV approached and someone inside opened fire, Chicago police said.
Magby, shot in the back, drove away at a high rate of speed, swerved to avoid oncoming traffic but crashed head-on into a Volkswagen Jetta being driven by a 43-year-old Chicago man in the 5400 block of South Halsted Street, according to a police report.
Officers responding to the traffic crash found Magby, of the 7600 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, lying in the street, unresponsive, and she was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead there at 11:38 p.m., the Cook County medical examiner’s office and police said.
A 19-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Malibu suffered lacerations to her face and was taken to the University of Chicago in serious condition, officials said. Her condition was stabilized.
The 43-year-old man and 40-year-old woman who were inside the Jetta, which was northbound on Halsted, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Stroger Hospital where they were listed in good condition, officials said.
The silver SUV fled northbound and no one was in custody. Area 1 detectives are investigating.
