An urgent search has been launched for a missing aircrewman after a US Navy Sea Hawk helicopter crashed.
One US Navy soldier remains missing after the incident in the Arabian Sea in the early hours of the morning.
The MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter is assigned to the USS George HW Bush aircraft carrier, one of the biggest American warships that has been sailing in the region.
It was carrying four crew members when it performed an emergency landing into the water, the US Navy’s 5th Fleet command centre said on social media.
The incident is not believed to have been caused by hostile action, navy officials said.
Three of the four crew were taken to safety in stable condition.
The fourth person is being searched.
US 5th Fleet said: ‘On July 1 at 3:30 a.m. ET, the aircrew of an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter assigned to USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77) conducted an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea.
‘There is no indication the emergency was caused by hostile action. Three of the helicopter’s four crew members have been recovered and are in stable condition aboard George H. W. Bush.
‘U.S. Navy assets in the region are currently searching for other aircrewman still missing. The cause of incident is under investigation.’
The US Navy has deployed assets in the region following the ongoing conflict with Iran, which has seen the Strait of Hormuz being blocked.
Metro has contacted the Pentagon for more information.
