The Cubs’ most obvious need going into trade deadline week was pitching. And they continued to address that need with their second move Wednesday.
The Cubs are acquiring veteran reliever Andrew Kittredge from the Orioles, the Cubs announced Thursday morning — after right-hander Michael Soroka became the Cubs’ first trade deadline addition.
The Cubs are sending minor-league infielder Wilfri De La Cruz, 17, to the Orioles in the trade. De La Cruz, who had recorded an .859 OPS in the Dominican Summer League this year, was the No. 17 prospect in the Cubs’ system, according to MLB Pipeline, after they traded two Top-15 prospects for Soroka.
Kittredge, in his ninth major-league season, has recorded a 3.56 ERA for the Orioles this year. The 35-year-old appeared in the playoffs two of the past three seasons, in 2021 and 2023 with the Rays, tossing 4 ⅓ scoreless innings combined.
At the end of June, the Cubs’ bullpen owned the second-best ERA in the majors (3.27). But they’ve struggled in July, with a bottom-three ERA (6.00) this month.
The trade deadline is Thursday at 5 p.m. CT.
The Cubs are expected to continue to pursue pitching.
