Cupertino’s interim city manager named to permanent position

After serving as Cupertino’s interim city manager since May, Tina Kapoor was named to the permanent position by a unanimous vote of the City Council on Nov. 18. Kapoor assumed the her new role the following day.

Kapoor has almost 25 years of local government experience, having worked for the cities of San José, Fremont and Cupertino. Prior to her appointment as interim city manager, she served as Cupertino’s interim assistant city manager, deputy city manager and economic development manager.

Before coming to Cupertino, Kapoor led major economic development initiatives in Fremont and San José, supporting business growth, downtown revitalization and workforce development. As head of economic development for San Jose, Kapoor in 2015 was named a Woman of Influence in Silicon Valley by the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

Kapoor immigrated to the United States from India in 1999 and is Cupertino’s first Indian American city manager. In her new role, Kapoor will oversee all municipal operations, implement City Council policy direction and continue advancing Cupertino’s priorities.

“I look forward to supporting our strong city team and collaborating with council and the community to maintain the high level of service that the city provides to our residents while developing a vision for the city’s future,” Kapoor said in a release.

“Tina Kapoor’s experience, work ethic and leadership make her exceptionally well-suited to guide Cupertino forward,” said Mayor Liang Chao. “Tina has been a great partner for the City Council since she was appointed interim city manager, and I look forward to working with her to continue to strengthen our organization.”
