ST. LOUIS — The White Sox placed infielder Danny Mendick on the 10-day injured list with back tightness Saturday and recalled third baseman Bryan Ramos from Double-A Birmingham.
Mendick’s move is retroactive to May 2.
Ramos, 22, is hitting .182 with five doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI. He is the Sox’ No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline.
Ramos has hit safely in his last eight games, going 11-for-33 with five doubles, two homers, seven RBI and seven runs scored.
“What can I say?” Ramos said Saturday morning. “Every kid dreams of it when they are little. To be here now is kind of everything. I’m so happy right now.”
Ramos has no major league experience. He is not in the lineup for Saturday af
ternoon’s game against the Cardinals but will play a lot beginning Sunday, manager Pedro Grifol said.
“He’ll take it all in today and then he’ll get a lot of playing time,” Grifol said. “He’s here to play and it’s a good opportunity for him to experience this and a good opportunity for us to evaluate where he is in his development.
“Extremely talented, extremely young. He’s got really all the tools to play at this level.”
Mendick’s move is retroactive to May 2. He said he tweaked his back reaching for a suitcase.
“It was weird, just kind of picked up an object the wrong way and that night, felt a little tweak and the next morning my back was just in a tough spot,” he said. “But I feel good today. These next couple days, do some work and hopefully get back tomorrow.”
Mendick said he expects to be back by the end of the IL stint.
NOTE: Outfielder Brett Phillips, who was at Triple-A Charlotte, was released by the Sox.
The White Sox mustered three hits against Sonny Gray and the Cards’ bullpen.
Vaughn, who slumped most of April, entered Friday’s game in St. Louis batting .308 in his last six games.
