Denver residents will need to wait another week to get rid of their compost after citywide furloughs derail the pickup schedule, city officials said.
City crews will not collect compost during the week of Aug. 25 as staff work a shortened week and take a furlough day on Friday, according to a news release from the city’s Solid Waste Management Division.
All collections, including composting, will resume the week of Sept. 1. The schedule will be delayed by one day because of Labor Day, city officials said in the release.
Denver officials announced plans in May to lay off employees, institute a hiring freeze and require unpaid furloughs. Each city employee, except for uniformed law enforcement, fire and 911 personnel, will be required to take at least two unpaid furlough days.
For Denver’s Solid Waste Management Division, that second furlough day will come on Nov. 28. Compost collection will be canceled again during that week, city officials said.
