Denver Summit FC on pace to break attendance record for women’s professional sports

Denver Summit FC is more than halfway to history.

The club announced Monday that it has already sold 25,000 tickets for its inaugural home match on March 28 at Empower Field.

That puts Summit FC about 16,000 tickets away from breaking the attendance record for the National Women’s Soccer League — and women’s professional sports overall — set in an NWSL match earlier this season between Bay FC and the Washington Spirit at Oracle Park in San Francisco. That game saw a sold-out crowd of 40,091.

With the early ticket-selling pace that Summit FC is on for its inaugural home match, that mark appears destined to fall. Empower Field’s capacity is 76,125, and team president Jen Millet has not been shy about Summit FC’s goal of selling out the Broncos’ stadium that Saturday.

“There is nothing more powerful than a city showing up for its team,” Millet said in a statement. “Crossing the 25,000 mark for ‘The Kickoff’ tells us everything we need to know about what this moment means to Denver. This match is more than a game. It’s a statement about the power of women’s sports and what this community is capable of building together.”

The early fervor for Summit FC, which is closing in on 20,000 fans on its season-ticket deposit list, hasn’t been dampened by some drama between the club and Denver City Council over the plans to build a 14,500-seat stadium and entertainment district at Santa Fe Yards. Last week, the club threatened to look for a stadium site outside the city after the council delayed votes on an initial $50 million allocation to the project at Broadway and I-25.

City officials have said Denver will invest up to $70 million in the project, but for now, the council wants more details on the city’s financial agreement with the team.

Summit FC is scheduled to open its 2026 season on the road a few weeks before its match at Empower Field. After that match, the club will play its home games for the next two years at its temporary stadium in Centennial.
