LOS ANGELES — As part of a series of moves to set their 40-man roster for the offseason, the Dodgers designated former All-Star Tony Gonsolin for assignment and waived outfielder Justin Dean and right-hander Michael Grove.
Added to the 40-man roster were outfielder Ryan Ward (the 2025 Pacific Coast League MVP) and left-hander Robinson Ortiz. Dean was claimed by the San Francisco Giants.
Gonsolin was in his final year of arbitration eligibility this winter. An All-Star in 2022 when he went 16-1 with a 2.14 ERA in 24 starts, Gonsolin underwent Tommy John surgery in 2023 and missed all of the 2024 season. He returned to make seven starts this season before undergoing a second elbow surgery in August.
Dean was on the Dodgers’ roster throughout their postseason roster, appearing only as a defensive replacement. During the regular season, he hit .289 with 27 stolen bases in 90 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City. He previously spent six seasons in the Atlanta Braves’ system without reaching the major leagues.
Grove spent parts of three seasons with the Dodgers, going 7-7 with a 5.48 ERA as a swingman. He did not pitch this year after undergoing surgery in March to repair a torn labrum.
Ward was an eighth-round draft pick in 2019 and spent parts of the past three seasons in OKC. He hit .290 this year with 37 home runs, 122 RBIs and a .937 OPS. It was his second consecutive 100-RBI season for OKC but he has yet to make his major-league debut.
Ortiz split last season between three levels, going 5-2 with a 2.73 ERA while striking out 72 in 59⅓ innings while rising from Class-A Great Lakes through Double-A Tulsa to OKC.
