LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers swapped minor-league pitchers with the Seattle Mariners on Sunday in a maneuver that clears a spot on the 40-man roster before Tuesday’s deadline to set the roster.
The Dodgers sent left-hander Robinson Ortiz to the Mariners in exchange for right-hander Tyler Gough. Ortiz was added to the 40-man roster earlier this month. Gough will not be on the 40-man roster, clearly a spot to protect another minor-leaguer from next month’s Rule 5 draft by adding that player before Tuesday’s deadline.
Gough was the Mariners’ ninth-round pick in the 2022 draft. He pitched in Class-A in 2024, going 7-4 with a 4.33 ERA. But his season ended in August and he didn’t pitch in 2025 while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2017, Ortiz’s progress was slowed by injuries and the pandemic which forced cancellation of the 2020 minor-league season. But he split last season between three levels, going 5-2 with a 2.73 ERA while striking out 72 in 59⅓ innings, while rising from Class-A Great Lakes through Double-A Tulsa to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The Dodgers currently have 38 players on their 40-man roster.
