Dodgers welcome back Kopech, Kim – and take minor-league flier on Heaney

PITTSBURGH — The Dodgers made two expected additions to their roster on Monday – and one unexpected addition to the organization.

Right-hander Michael Kopech and infielder Hyeseong Kim were activated from the injured list as planned. They take the two additional spots with rosters expanding to 28 for September.

And former Dodgers left-hander Andrew Heaney rejoined the organization after being released by the Pittsburgh Pirates last week. Heaney signed a minor-league contract so he has not been added to the 40-man roster. But the agreement was finalized on Sunday, making him eligible for a postseason roster if the Dodgers decide to add him.

The 34-year-old left-hander started his career with the Miami Marlins but spent parts of seven seasons with the Angels – after passing through the Dodgers in a pair of trades in December 2011. Heaney was 30-33 with a 4.51 ERA in 102 starts for the Angels, was traded to the New York Yankees at the deadline in 2021 then signed with the Dodgers as a free agent for the 2022 season.

Heaney pitched well for the Dodgers, going 4-4 with a 3.10 ERA in 16 games (14 starts) but was sidelined by shoulder issues. He spent two years with the Texas Rangers then signed with the Pirates as a free agent in February.

He started the season well for the Pirates, going 3-4 with a 3.24 ERA through 13 starts. But he posted an 8.63 ERA over his next 13 games, was bounced from the starting rotation and designated for assignment then released last week. Heaney is expected to report to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Kopech, meanwhile, has spent most of the season on the IL. He started there following forearm and shoulder issues this spring and didn’t make his season debut until early June. After eight appearances, he went back on the IL  following surgery to repair meniscus damage in his right knee.

Kim has been sidelined since late July with bursitis in his left shoulder. In 58 games with the Dodgers this season, the Korean rookie has hit .304.
