A large dog was shot and killed by at least one Los Angeles police officer this week after the dog attacked a sanitation employee and then an officer during a cleanup operation at a Pacoima homeless encampment, authorities said.
The shooting occurred about 10:35 a.m. Tuesday in the 10200 block of Norris Avenue, according to Los Angeles police.
Officers were assisting the Los Angeles Sanitation Bureau and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, police said. During the cleanup effort, a sanitation employee was removing debris from a public sidewalk when a large dog emerged from an area near a parked RV and attacked the employee.
“Officers immediately intervened to stop the attack,” police said. “However, the dog redirected its aggression and attacked one of the officers,” leading at least one officer to fire.
The dog was struck and died, police said. Both the sanitation employee and the officer sustained multiple bite injuries and a LAHSA employee suffered a minor abrasion.
They were taken to a hospital for treatment.
No other injuries were reported. The Los Angeles Sanitation Bureau took custody of the dog’s remains and took them to the L.A. Department of Animal Services’ East Valley shelter for a necropsy, police said.
