Driver nearly strikes pedestrian in West Loop crosswalk — then gets out of car and shoots him, police say

A driver jumped from his car screaming death threats as he raced after a 42-year-old pedestrian and shot him in the leg Thursday morning in the West Loop, according to Chicago police.

The 42-year-old had been walking in the 500 block of West Van Buren Street around 8:30 a.m. and was in a crosswalk when a black Chevrolet Malibu with Indiana plates nearly hit him, according to police reports obtained by the Sun-Times. The pedestrian then kicked the Chevrolet, and the driver jumped out of the car, saying he was “going to kill him,” the police reports stated.

As the pedestrian began walking away , the gunman, wearing a black hat and a black and white striped jumpsuit, parked on Canal Street and began following the 42-year-old before pulling out a handgun and shooting him in the left leg, police said.

The pedestrian, who could not be reached immediately by the Sun-Times, was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was in good condition.

Meanwhile, the shooter returned to his car and sped away southbound on Canal Street, officials said.

Area 3 detectives continued to investigate.
