DUI, reckless homicide charges approved for driver in fatal Stevenson wreck near Bridgeport

A 20-year-old Chicago man has been released from a hospital and charged with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence after a weekend crash on the Stevenson Expressway that left him injured and his passenger dead.

About 4:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Wentworth Avenue, Armando Gonzalez Vargas was behind the wheel of a white GMC that rear-ended another SUV, causing Vargas’ GMC to run off the road and slam into a concrete median barrier, state police said.

Carlos E. Vazquez, 26 and of Chicago, was a passenger in the GMC, was pronounced deceased on scene, according to state police, who said Gonzalez Vargas was taken to an area hospital with injuries.

The driver and passenger of the SUV were also transported to an area hospital with injuries, state police said.

Sunday, he was released from the hospital and charged, state police said.
