Eisenhower Expressway shut down in Westchester for fatal police investigation

The Eisenhower Expressway was closed in both directions in Westchester about 10 a.m. Thursday morning for an Illinois State Police investigation into an apparently suspicious fatal incident, police said.

It’s unclear exactly what happened but the Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed one person has died, and WGN9 reported that a bomb squad responded to the scene.

State police said the incident happened about 10:05 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 290 near Mannheim Road.

The following lanes were closed, according to police: eastbound and westbound lanes on I-290; Mannheim Road to I-290; Mannheim Road over I-290; eastbound I-88 to eastbound I-290.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area and take alternate routes. The closures extended into the afternoon rush hour, and it was unknown normal traffic could resume.

No other information was available late Thursday afternoon.
