At least 10 people have been injured in a mass stabbing attack on a busy high-speed LNER heading to London.

Passengers were trapped in carriages as the attacker began knifing people, with people trampling over each other and hiding in toilets to escape the knifeman.

One ‘extremely bloodied’ victim entered carriages saying, ‘They’ve got a knife, I’ve been stabbed,’ before collapsing.

At 7.42pm last night the reports of knife injuries were raised on the 6.25pm LNER train from Doncaster to London King’s Cross.

Witnesses say the attack unfolded shortly after the train pulled out of Peterborough, also in Cambridgeshire, which was a scheduled stop.

The train then made an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon where police boarded.

A witness called Gavin told Sky News: ‘The armed police were pointing to the suspect as we came off the train.

‘Police were shouting “get down, get down!” The suspect was waving quite a large knife. They detained him. I think it was a Taser that got him down in the end.’

How many people have been injured?

At least 10 people have reported injuries, with nine in life-threatening condition.

Passenger Olly Foster said two people were ‘severely stabbed’ ahead of him.

He said: ‘A young girl was distraught as the attacker tried to stab her, but a hero of an older man got in the way taking a gash on his forehead and I think another on his neck.’

Wren Chambers told BBC she thought the attack was a ‘halloween prank’ at first – until she saw people running through the carriages.

She said: ‘There was a girl next to me who was near where the first stabbings happened.

‘She said the man on the floor stepped in front of her and then got stabbed in the neck.’

What have the police said so far?

Two people have been arrested and counter-terrorism police have been called in to join the investigation.

The motive for the attack remains unclear.

Chief Superintendent Chris Casey of British Transport Police said: ‘This is a shocking incident and first and foremost my thoughts are with those who have been injured this evening and their families.

‘We’re conducting urgent enquiries to establish what has happened, and it could take some time before we are in a position to confirm anything further.

‘At this early stage, it would not be appropriate to speculate on the causes of the incident.

‘Our response is ongoing at the station and will be for some time.’

What is the travel disruption and how long is it expected to last?

LNER, which operates East Coast Mainline services in the UK, has said that services running between London King’s Cross and Lincoln, Doncaster, Leeds, Bradford Forster Square and Harrogate will be disrupted today and tomorrow.

Passengers are advised to defer their travel where possible.

Thameslink trains will not serve Huntingdon for the time being.

‘Disruption is expected until the end of day,’ the railway operator said.
