Around 6:12 p.m. Wednesday, Pacifica police and North County Fire Authority workers arrived to the 1000 block of Everglades Drive after receiving a report of an explosion. Police initially reported that the cause of the incident might have been household chemicals that were accidentally combined, resulting in an explosion.
The San Mateo County Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team and the San Mateo County Bomb Squad also responded in accordance with their protocols. A local building official also arrived and decided the damaged house was safe for occupancy. Police also said that the homeowner cooperated with authorities and the explosion did not pose a risk to the community.
During the investigation, a stretch of Everglades Drive between Picardo Court and Park Pacifica Avenue was closed for five hours.
Pacifica police, the North County Fire Authority and the San Mateo County Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team will continue to investigate the explosion, authorities said.
