City leaders and Los Angeles Police Department brass will be on hand this week with family members of some of the 241 officers who passed away in the line of duty for an annual memorial ceremony featuring a rifle volley, a volunteer choir and a helicopter flyover.
The Wednesday morning ceremony is expected to have Mayor Karen Bass and other elected officials on hand, with LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell presiding.
Traditional police honors, a roll call of fallen officers, a riderless horse, a rifle volley, a missing-man formation helicopter flyover, bagpipers playing Amazing Grace, a solo bugler playing Taps and an “End of Watch Broadcast” were planned.
The Memorial Ceremony is also to include performances by the LAPD Choir, which consists of a group of sworn and civilian LAPD employees, who join up and perform on a volunteer basis.
“At the conclusion of the program, family members, friends and partners of fallen officers will share an opportunity of remembrance and reflection as they place a long stem rose near their loved one’s name plate on the Memorial Wall” in the courtyard at LAPD headquarters, according to an event announcement.
