Fatal M60 crash causes tailbacks for Oasis fans ahead of Heaton Park comeback gig

A fatal crash on the motorway has caused huge delays for Oasis fans desperate to get to their Heaton Park comeback gig.

Tragically, a man was killed after being hit by a car near J20 on the M60 near Manchester on Sunday.

Police, paramedics and fire crews raced to the scene shutting down the motorway in both directions.

Desperate fans, dressed in bucket hats, were seen walking along the hard shoulder in an attempt to get to the concert in time.

One post on X read: ‘Oasis fans are walking on the motorway to get to Heaton Park and climbing over an embankment after motorway closed in both directions.’

‘Been here for ages,’ another person said. ‘People all over the motorway.’

National Highways confirmed traffic was also stopped on the anti-clockwise carriageway between junctions 23 and 22 due to the incident.

‘Anti-clockwise traffic is held J23-J22 due to a large number of pedestrians who’ve left their vehicles and are walking up the hard shoulder,’ a statement read.

Other motorists claimed that cars were being driven the wrong way and along the hard shoulder in a bid to get out of the large closure, which stretched in both directions between junctions 19 and 21.

‘Cars currently trying to drive the wrong way on the hard shoulder following an incident on M60 that we are currently stationary in…..idiots, if any other Emergency vehicles need to attend they won’t get through,’ one person shared to X.

A statement issued by National Highways read: ‘The M60 in Greater Manchester is closed in both directions between J19 Rhodes Interchange (Middleton, Manchester (Cen) A576) and J21 Broadway Interchange (Chadderton A663).

‘This is due to a serious incident which has occurred within the J20 Alkrington Interchange (Blackley, Moston A664)

‘Greater Manchester Police are leading the response to the incident and it is expected the road will be closed for a protracted period.

‘North West Ambulance Service have also attended the incident. National Highways Traffic Officers are in attendance and assisting with traffic management.’

The reunited Britpop rockers had a euphoric homecoming over the weekend, with hundreds of fans who didn’t manage to get their hands on a ticket flocking to the renamed ‘Gallagher Hill’ to watch the stage from a high vantage point.
