Father, son from suburban Chicago drown in lake near Indiana Dunes National Park

A father and son from suburban Chicago drowned in Lake Michigan near Indiana Dunes National Park on Saturday afternoon.

They were swimming in a remote area of the lake near the town of Dune Acres, when 20-year-old Jameson Meneou, of Lockport, went into deep water and began to struggle, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

His father, David Meneou, 65, of Joliet, followed and tried to rescue him, but he also began to struggle, officials said.

Officers were called about 4:30 p.m. and used off-road vehicles and a rescue boat to reach the men. When officers arrived, a Good Samaritan had already pulled them both out of the water, officials said.

Conservation officers and rangers took the men by boat to the Port of Indiana while performing CPR.

The father and son were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were pronounced dead, officials said.

The incident is still under investigation.
