FedEx, Goodwill shut some Bay Area sites and chop hundreds of jobs

OAKLAND — FedEx and Goodwill have disclosed plans to shut multiple Bay Area sites and chop a combined hundreds of jobs in a reminder that the region’s hiring retrenchment extends well beyond the tech sector.

The layoffs will affect workers in Oakland, Emeryville and San Francisco, according to official WARN notices the two organizations sent to the state Employment Development Department.

The cutbacks are being revealed to the EDD during a time when the Bay Area job market is going through a sour stretch.

Over the first two months of 2025, the Bay Area has lost a net total of 18,200 jobs and shed jobs in both January and February.

All told, the two organizations intend to slash a combined total of 264 Bay Area jobs.

FedEx has decided to cut 174 jobs while Goodwill has disclosed plans to lay off 90 workers, the WARN notices show.

Here are the details of the layoffs and the locations where the sites are being permanently closed, according to the WARN filings sent to the EDD:

— FedEx, 95 job cuts at a shipping center on Pardee Avenue in Oakland.

— Fed Ex, 79 layoffs at a shipping center on 63rd Street in Emeryville.

— Goodwill, 72 staffing reductions at a site on 30th Avenue in Oakland.

— Goodwill, 18 job cuts at a site on Post Street in San Francisco.

All of the layoffs were described as permanent. The two organizations also said they intended to permanently cease operations at the four facilities.

FedEx said its layoffs would take effect on June 2. Goodwill scheduled its job cuts for June 7.

The primary impact on FedEx workers would be on its couriers at the two sites it is closing. It appeared possible that some FedEx workers might be able to land jobs at other FedEx sites.

“Any employees whose positions are eliminated and/or impacted will be provided the options to consider transfer to new locations, severance, or a leave of absence during which they may pursue other positions with FedEx,” FedEx employee law attorney Robbin Hutton stated in the WARN letter to the EDD.
