Flight attendant in hospital with hantavirus after contact with woman who died

Some 19 British nationals were listed as passengers on the MV Hondius, which was sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde, with four British crew members.

A Dutch flight attendent who came into contact with a woman who died of hantavirus has now been taken to hospital.

The individual ‌was a flight attendant at Dutch airline KLM, who ⁠had been ​in contact ​with ​a woman who was taken off the flight and later ⁠died in a hospital in Johannesburg.

The infected victim, part of a Dutch couple, both aged 69 – may have contracted it during a bird-watching outing in Ushuaia, the southermost city in the world in Argentina.

The couple visited a landfill site during the trip where they may have been exposed to rodents carrying the infection.

British passengers on board a hantavirus-hit cruise ship will be asked to self-isolate in the UK for 45 days on their return.
