Former Bulls head coach Billy Donovan has found a new NBA home.
The San Antonio Spurs have added Donovan to their coaching staff, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Donovan had spent the last 11 seasons as a head coach in Oklahoma City and Chicago, but will now take a step back, operating as the Spurs’ “lead assistant coach” under head coach Mitch Johnson.
The Spurs lost to the 2026 NBA Finals to the Knicks in five games.
The Bulls announced Donovan’s departure from the team on April 21 after he turned down the option year on his contract.
‘‘After a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organization, I have decided to step away as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls to allow the search process to unfold,’’ Donovan said in a statement in April. ‘‘I believe it is in the best interest of the Bulls to allow the new leader to build out the staff as they see fit.’’
The Bulls hired Tiago Splitter last month as Donovan’s replacement.

It took more than 12 hours — not the usual order of NBA free agency — but the Bulls nabbed their veteran guard as Norman Powell agreed to a two-year, $45 million deal to help move the rebuild through the growing pains.

The free-agent market was a slow one Tuesday, as the Bulls remained more rumor than active participant. They did extend center Zach Collins to a two-year deal but stay tuned.
