A Studio City home previously owned by the late Joseph Barbera, one-half of the legendary animation team Hanna-Barbera, is on the market for $12 million.
Known as “The Storyboard Estate,” the property includes a 7,000-square-foot Tudor-style main residence and a separate guest house for a combined 8,914 square feet with six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Public records show the current owner bought it for $4.95 million in July 2014 from Barbera’s widow, Sheila.
According to listing agents, Byrd Homes, led by Gary Byrd, completed the home for the Barberas in the late 1980s. Yet PropertyShark documents show the formal transfer of ownership to the couple was not officially recorded until March 1994.
The house features a porte cochere and sits at the end of a long, lawn- and tree-lined driveway. Spanning nearly two acres in Fryman Canyon, the property includes a neighboring 19,006-square-foot vacant parcel.
Inside, the floor plan features generous size living and dining areas, a family room with a wet bar and a kitchen anchored by a center island. The breakfast room opens to the outdoors.
A fireplace warms the primary suite, which includes a sitting area, ample closet space and a bathroom with a freestanding tub and a glass-enclosed shower.
The guest house provides extra space away from the main house, while the backyard features a pool, spa and tennis court complemented by terraces for dining and lounging.
A garage for a collection of 25-plus cars round out the offering.
Barbera and partner William Hanna launched their studio in 1957. While Hanna handled the physical production, timing and business side, Barbera served as the creative powerhouse behind the writing, gags and character designs of the duo’s most beloved hits, including “Tom and Jerry,” “Scooby-Doo,” “The Flintstones,” “The Jetsons,” “Yogi Bear” and “Huckleberry Hound.” He died in December 2006 at 95.
