Veterans Day began as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I and to honor the heroism of those who died in the country’s service.
In 1954, the name of the holiday was changed from “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day” in order to recognize veterans of all wars.
Many other cities in the area will also honor veterans, either this weekend or on the holiday itself. Long Beach, for example, will combine its upcoming open streets event with a Veterans celebration on Saturday, while Redondo Beach will have a Veterans Day tribute a 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11.
Check your city’s website for information on what officials there have planned.
