Fire crews are ventilating the hospital after patients and staff were removed from the basement and ground floor.

A witness at the scene wrote on X that a ‘chemical explosion’ had occurred in the basement.

The fire brigade said in an incident report that the incident involved ‘hazardous materials’.

It added: ‘The brigade was first called about the incident at 8.49am, with crews from Whitechapel, Dowgate, Euston and surrounding fire stations sent to the scene.’
