Hazmat incident closes I-25 on-ramp, 84th Avenue in Thornton

A southbound Interstate 25 on-ramp was closed Monday morning in Thornton for a hazmat incident involving a box truck, police said.

The on-ramp to southbound I-25 at 84th Avenue was shut down early Monday morning, according to a 3:02 a.m. statement from the Thornton Police Department.

Police said 84th Avenue is closed in both directions from Grant Street to Conifer Road for the hazmat investigation. Both the on-ramp and 84th Avenue are expected to remain closed “for an extended period of time,” police said.

Firefighters responded to reports of a leaking FedEx delivery truck carrying six totes of hydrochloric acid,  Thornton Deputy Fire Chief Ernie Anderson told Denver7. The driver was en route from a shipping warehouse in Denver to Wyoming when he noticed the leak.
