What makes this photo important?
A major part of a photojournalist’s job requires documenting small but important moments in people’s lives and in their communities. I was privileged to bear witness to a procession and vigil for the transgender community in Northalsted during the Trans Day of Remembrance on Thursday. It’s important to give visibility and tell stories of marginalized communities.
How I got this picture
By this point in my shift I was already two assignments down, and the well of creativity was starting to get depleted. The event didn’t manifest in the way that we anticipated. Despite all of this, I was able to document intimate moments during the vigil, including when the procession walked by a freshly painted crosswalk with the full LGBTQIA+ pride flag.
