The online employment search sites CareerBuilder and Monster are reportedly planning to close its U.S. headquarters office in the Loop and lay off staff members later this year.
According to a post on LinkedIn by the Job Board Doctor, CareerBuilder + Monster Chief Executive Officer Jeff Furman sent a letter Thursday notifying employees of the closure of its office building at 200 N. La Salle St. It’s unclear when the Loop office will close.
Some employees were also terminated, but it’s not clear how many. Their last day of employment would be Aug. 4, according to the letter.
CareerBuilder + Monster is exploring a sale of the company and operations will continue “as normal” during the sale process, a spokesperson said in a statement to the Sun-Times.
“To provide us with flexibility during the ongoing sale process and ensure we are meeting any obligations under U.S. federal and state law with regards to potential headcount reductions, we are providing WARN notices to the majority of U.S.-based employees,” the spokesperson said.
The WARN Act requires employers with 75 or more full-time employees to provide 60 days notice of pending plant closures or mass layoffs. Companies can avoid that by instead providing 60 days of pay before the employees are let go. The state’s website that tracks WARN notices did not have the layoffs listed as of Saturday afternoon.
CareerBuilder, based in Chicago, completed a merger with Massachusetts-based Monster in September 2024.
