A shooting during a memorial in Little Village was a “real tragedy” said a co-worker of Froylan Garcia, who was killed during the attack that left six others wounded Saturday night.
Shortly after 10 p.m. a gunman jumped from a Jeep and fired dozens of shots into the crowd gathered on the front lawn of a home in the 2500 block of South Spaulding Avenue, police said.
Garcia, 32, was hit in the back, chest and wrist and was driven to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died. The six survivors, who were recovering at Mount Sinai, were said to be in fair condition, according to police.
A Monday autopsy listed the cause of Garcia’s death as multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which ruled his death a homicide.
Police leave leaflets at homes in the 2500 block of South Spaulding Avenue in Little Village on Sunday seeking information about the mass shooting the night before.
Garcia worked at McAdam Landscaping, according to co-worker Kristi White. She said Garcia was at the vigil because it was for an old friend of his.
White said this year was Garcia’s first season at the Forest Park company, but he was looking forward to returning next spring and summer.
“He was great to work with, he was responsible, respectful, and he seemed to be on a good path,” White said. “He cared very deeply about his family and friends.”
The other victims include a 31-year-old man who was shot in his right thigh; a 51-year-old man shot in his butt; and a 35-year-old man who suffered a graze wound to the top of his head. Another man, 39, was shot in his left leg and right hand. A 48-year-old man and a man estimated to be in his 30s were also shot in their legs.
Officers found about 40 shell casings and blood covered the sidewalk and sections of the street, according to a police report.
No one is in custody.
