Former Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling is set to receive an almost $190,000 yearly pension, records show.
The Policemen’s Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago approved $15,744.73 in monthly payments to Snelling at a meeting last month, according to the records obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.
Snellling, a 34-year department veteran, collected his first payment on Aug. 31, records show. He’s set to receive an annual 3% increase in payments starting in August 2027.
Snelling retired on July 15 after leading the department for nearly three years and almost maxing out his pension fund.
Former Patrol Chief Fred Waller, who served as a key civilian aide to Snelling, is now serving as acting police superintendent for a second time amid a nationwide search for Snelling’s permanent replacement.
Between his pension and city salary, Waller was earning $374,695.32 annually as of late June, records show. In comparison, Mayor Brandon Johnson makes $221,052 a year from his salary.
The police oversight panel tasked with finding Snelling’s replacement is now halfway through its allotted search period. By Nov. 12, the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability must present three finalists to Mayor Brandon Johnson.
So far, the body has held five listening sessions and selected a national search firm to help find the next superintendent. Once Johnson receives a list of finalists, he will have 30 days to either make a selection or reject all three.
