Los Angeles Mission College celebrates the graduation of the Class of 2025
Los Angeles Mission College celebrated the 50th anniversary of the school this year, and its proud senior students were honored with their diplomas as they graduated on the sunny morning of June 10. They cheered and hugged and looked forward to their futures.
The college has long been admired for its role in the San Fernando Valley, by offering educational opportunities to a highly diverse student population. Among them on Tuesday was 84-year-old Carlito Salayo Dayo, who excelled in art and plans to study interior design. Dayo grinned as Xavier Becerra, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, shook his hand.
Not to be overlooked, student Maria Tharpe, 49, was embraced by her 21-year-old son, during the Los Angeles Mission College commencement ceremony in Sylmar. Tharpe went to college even though she held more than one job.

In February of 1975, Los Angeles Mission College (LAMC) opened as a new addition to the Los Angeles Community College District. In the beginning the college didn’t have a permanent campus, so it held classes in numerous locations, renting space at high schools, churches, and office buildings. The college opened with about 1,200 students seeking a range of academic and vocational programs.
On this warm morning in the Valley, the crowd cheered when they saw a graduate they knew, and the Los Angeles Mission College Choir entertained for the crowd.
