M42 closed in both directions in rush hour after ‘police incident’

A stretch of the M42 has closed at peak rush hour after an incident on the motorway.

Traffic has come to a standstill on the M42 outside Birmingham this morning after an incident between junction J4 Shirley and J5 Solihull.

The motorway is closed in both directions, with long delays building up in the area.

Traffic is backing up past Birmingham International Airport up to junction 7 for the M6.

Footage shows drivers waiting at the road block come out of their vehicles after the road closed at about 6.30am as temperatures soar this morning ahead of another hot day.

One driver said on social media after being stuck for a couple of hours: ‘Waste of a 4am start, but someone’s having a worse day

‘Sun bathing on the M42.’

Another one wrote: ‘Stuck on the car park which is known as the M42.’

National Highways said: ‘M42 is closed in both directions – between J4 Shirley and J5 Solihull.

‘This is due to a West Midlands Police led incident.

‘Delays building, 2.5 miles of congestion both ways – northbound back to M40, southbound back to A45.’

Traffic analyst Inrix said in an alert: ‘Road closed and severe delays due to police incident on M42 both ways from J5 A41 Solihull By-pass (Solihull / Knowle) to J4 A3400 Stratford Road (Shirley / Dorridge).

‘Congestion to the M40 northbound and J7A southbound. Initially held at around 6:20.’
