Malibu provides free wildfire assessments to homeowners for fire prevention

In Malibu, a city situated within a very high fire hazard severity zone by Cal Fire’s designation, is seeking to help residents prepare their homes ahead of any future fires.

The city is offering brush clearance guidance and free wildfire home assessments to residents ahead of the city’s June 1 brush clearance deadline, when homeowners are expected to have cleared dead vegetation and flammable materials and have trimmed trees within 100 feet of their property.

“Brush clearance isn’t just a requirement, it’s a vital way to protect your home and our community,” Malibu Mayor Marianne Riggins said. “We’ve seen what wildfires can do. Let’s act now.”

Malibu was deeply affected by two fires that burned through parts of the city a month apart, the Franklin fire burned over 4,000 acres in Dec. 2024, and the Palisades fire burned over 23,000 acres in Jan. 2025.

Clearing brush creates defensible space, an important part of wildfire defense that can stop or slow flames, and is promoted by most fire agencies, including Cal Fire.

In Malibu’s program, the city sends fire safety liaisons to examine a home to provide personalized and low-cost recommendations to reduce fire risk. Malibu fire city liaisons work to educate the community about fire risks and monitor fire conditions in Malibu to provide reports to city officials, in addition to conducting assessments.

“Proper brush clearance and home hardening are among the most important, effective ways to prevent wildfire damage,” a city statement read in part.
