According to court records, a witness told police the shooting may have stemmed from Szugyi and some other people being victims of an attempted robbery. But that account has not been corroborated, authorities said.

After the shooting, Szugyi fled in a truck that police were later able to link to him. It was not clear if the truck has been recovered.

According to court documents, authorities searched a recreational vehicle belonging to Szugyi and found evidence linking him to the shooting. Police have not specified what the evidence was.

According to the court records, Szugyi was convicted of felony grand theft of real property in March of 2017 and was placed on probation.
