SAN JOSE – A man died after being detained by officers Wednesday morning in San Jose, police said.
Around 8:05 a.m., a physical confrontation was reported in the 400 block of South Buena Vista Avenue, but as officers headed to the scene, they received a second report that a man was experiencing a drug overdose, San Jose police Sgt. Jorge Garibay said in news release.
Officers arrived to find the man “completely naked and acting erratic,” Garibay said.
Minutes after officers took the man into custody, he began experiencing a medical emergency, Garibay said, adding that officers summoned paramedics and started life-saving measures.
The man was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Garibay said.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release the man’s identity once it is confirmed and his next of kin is notified.
Per protocol, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and the SJPD Homicide Unit are conducting a joint investigation into the in-custody death, Garibay said. The case is being monitored administratively by the SJPD Internal Affairs Unit, the City Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Independent Police Auditor.
Anyone with information related to the case can contact the police department at 408-277-5283.
