MILPITAS — A man died in custody Sunday afternoon at the Elmwood Correctional Complex, authorities said.
The 33-year-old man, who had been in custody since Feb. 14 after an arrest by the San Jose Police Department, was found unresponsive in his housing unit at 2:56 p.m., according to a press release from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
Medical personnel and jail staff performed CPR on the man until the arrival of emergency personnel from the Milpitas Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services at 3:09 p.m., authorities said.
The man was pronounced deceased at 3:31 p.m., authorities said.
The man’s identity will be released pending notification of his family, authorities said. They did not release information about the criminal investigation that led to his arrest.
The death is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, authorities added. Based on preliminary information, investigators do not believe that foul play or suspicious circumstances were involved.
The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office and the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office are working alongside the Sheriff’s Office to determine what occurred, authorities said.
