Man driving stolen car charged in crash that injured 2 cops near Wrigley Field

A motorist driving a stolen car was charged with a crash that seriously injured two Chicago police officers early Monday in Wrigleyville.

Orlando Matos III, of Chicago, was charged with aggravated reckless driving causing bodily harm and receiving, possessing or selling a stolen vehicle, police said. The 18-year-old was also cited for speeding, disregarding a stop sign, driving without a license, operating an uninsured vehicle and causing damage to public property.

The officers were southbound in the 3600 block of North Racine Avenue around 3 a.m. Monday when Matos, behind the wheel of a Hyundai Elantra, ran a stop sign and struck their marked police SUV.

The officers were taken to a hospital and treated for “serious” injuries, police said. Matos III was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.

Matos III was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
