Man drowns while fishing on San Mateo County coast

SAN MATEO COUNTY — A man drowned while fishing Wednesday on the San Mateo County coast, officials said.

Crews were called to Bean Hollow State Beach near Pescadero around 3 p.m. for reports of a person in the water, according to the Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit.

A woman said she and her husband were wearing waders and fishing when he vanished.

“She went to their car for something, and when she came back, he was gone,” Cal Fire said.

A bystander spotted the man, and firefighters pulled him from the water. They gave him CPR, but he died at the scene.

He is the fourth person to die off the California coast in recent weeks. Amanpreet Thind, a 35-year-old U.S. Army specialist from New Jersey, was swept into the ocean at Soberanes Point in Garrapata State Park on Nov. 22. A week earlier, Yuji Hu, 39, of Calgary, Alberta, and his 7-year-old daughter were killed in rough waters off Garrapata State Beach.

A “beach hazards” warning was issued Wednesday for San Mateo County, with breaking waves expected to reach 10 to 14 feet, according to the National Weather Service.
