A man searched “how to kill someone with a hammer?” on Google before bludgeoning his transgender on-again-off-again girlfriend to death earlier this month in Garfield Park, according to Cook County prosecutors.
Deandre Bell, 24, also searched for, “if a person gets hit in the head with a hammer while sleeping what happens,” before striking the head of Davonta Curtis, 31, with a hammer in her apartment, according to a proffer read in court Saturday by prosecutors.
Bell allegedly sped away from the crime scene in Curtis’ car in the early morning of April 6, prosecutors said.
Two days later, Curtis’ sister found the woman dead in her apartment, partially covered by a sheet and near a large pool of blood, prosecutors said. Curtis’ blue Hyundai and car keys were also missing, prosecutors said.
Later that day, police found Bell driving in the car alone, prosecutors said. In custody, Bell admitted to striking Curtis, who was a sex worker, with a hammer until she stopped moving, prosecutors said.
The defendant also allegedly admitted to stealing the victim’s keys, phone and money. He also identified himself in video showing a man leaving Curtis’ apartment, prosecutors said.
Bell’s blood was found on a screwdriver and hammer in the defendant’s backpack, prosecutor said.
Prosecutors did not offer a motive for the killing in the proffer.
A judge ordered Bell held pending trial.
