Man jailed for throwing kettle of boiling water over officers trying to detain him

A man has been jailed for more than 14 years after pouring boiling water over an officer as she tried to arrest him.

John Davies was confronted by police in his garden in Birmingham, where he had cornered a man against the fence.

Davies, 58, suddenly became incensed, throwing a hot drink at his victim after he told officers Davies had a knife, which he denied.

Questioned by a female officer over whether he had a weapon, he said: ‘Search me’.

He then threw the contents of a hot kettle at the policewoman, leaving her with blisters over her shoulders, neck and back.

In footage of the incident, she is heard screaming: ‘I need an ambo. I’ve been scalded with a kettle.’

A violent man who threw boiling water from a kettle over an officer and punched another as they tried to detain him has been jailed for more than 14 years. The two officers were called to a disturbance in the garden of John Davies? Birmingham home, where they found he had another man cornered against a fence. One of the officers split the men up, before Davies went back inside his house. The other man told the officers that Davies had a knife. Davies was confronted about the knife by the officers, but he denied it. Suddenly, he threw the contents of a hot drink he had made into the face of the man he?d been arguing with. The officers tried to arrest Davies, but he punched one in the face and grabbed the recently boiled kettle and poured the water over the other. She was left with blistering over her shoulders, back and neck. Davies was arrested by the officers? colleagues and went on to admit maliciously wounding the PC he scalded with intent to resist arrest, assaulting the officer he punched, and assaulting the man he'd been arguing with when officers arrived. He was given an extended licence period of four years. DC Manpreet Sidhu, from the neighbourhood crime team at Bournville, said: "This was a horrendous attack on two officers going about their duties. "You can see from the footage that Davies put up a struggle, and it took many officers to restrain him so that he could be brought into custody. "One of the officers involved suffered significant injuries and has only recently been able to return to work following this assault. "No one should have to face this level of violence simply for doing their job and I hope the sentence delivered to Davies provides some justice for those involved. "This will have a lasting impact on the officers but now Davies is where he firmly belongs in prison.? Both officers have returned to work.

Davies also punched her colleague in the face, and it took several officers to finally detain him.

He later admitted to maliciously wounding the police constable in a bid to resist arrest, as well as assaulting the man he attacked in the garden.

After appearing at Birmingham Crown Court, Davies was sentenced to 14 years and six months in jail on Friday.

He was also given an extended licence period of four years.

Both of the officers involved in the attack have since gone back to work.

DC Manpreet Sidhu said: ‘This was a horrendous attack on two officers going about their duties.
