The man convicted of shooting two people outside of a Castle Rock apartment complex in 2022, killing one of them, was sentenced Friday to 60 years in prison, court records show.
Miguel Angel Mercado, 23, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder, 20 years in prison for attempted second-degree murder and 20 years in prison for first-degree assault, according to court records.
One of the 20-year sentences will be served concurrently, and the other two sentences will be served consecutively, bringing Mercado’s total prison time to 60 years, 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office spokesperson Tom Mustin said.
The shooting, which started as a fistfight over accusations of cheating, happened in the parking lot of the Pines at Castle Rock Apartments just after 1 a.m. Nov. 29, 2022.
Miguel Angel Mercado pulled out a gun during the fight and opened fire, killing Daniel Vilchis Mercado and injuring another man, according to the district attorney’s office.
The shooter and the victim are not related.
A Douglas County jury found Mercado guilty in May.
