A shootout between a 26-year-old gunman and two Chicago police officers left the gunman seriously hurt Monday night in the South Chicago neighborhood.
Around 10:35 p.m., officers responded to a report of a person with a gun in the 8200 block of S. South Shore Drive. They eventually stopped a man matching the description from the report in the 3100 block of East 83rd Street, police said.
Officers approached the man and, police said, tried to de-escalate the situation while telling the. man to keep his hands visible but an exchange of gunfire erupted between the man and two officers. The man was hit by gunfire, police said.
The man was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center where he was in serious condition, authorities said.
Both officers were taken to area hospitals for observation, police said.
A gun was was recovered at the scene.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the shooting. The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
