Police are investigating the death of a man found bound, gagged and wearing an electronic ankle monitor on the floor of a Bridgeport apartment Tuesday night.
Around 6:30 p.m., a 27-year-old man returned from work to his three-bedroom apartment in the 1000 block of West 31st Street to find the man lying face down on the kitchen floor, according to police reports obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times.
The victim’s arms and legs were bound with rope and wire, and his head was wrapped in a blanket, according to the reports. A piece of clothing was found shoved in his mouth, and an electronic monitor was attached to his ankle, the report said.
The witness, who lived with the victim, flagged down officers. The victim, whose name was not released, was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:10 p.m., according to the police report.
It was not clear what caused his death. An autopsy is scheduled, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The Cook County sheriff’s office referred questions about the electronic monitor to the Office of the Chief Judge. A spokesperson for the chief judge said the victim, 27, was on EM with the adult probation department. Court records show he was arrested in March on aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance charges.
The 27-year-old told officers he saw the man “in good health” before leaving for work Tuesday around 9 a.m., officials said. His PlayStation 5, $700 and two pairs of shoes were missing from his bedroom.
The man, the victim and two brothers each rented a bedroom in the apartment, authorities said.
The man who found the body declined to answer questions when reached by a Sun-Times reporter.
Detectives had no motive for the slaying, which is being investigated as a homicide.
No arrests have been made.
